Twenty Years of Progress
It's hard for anyone shopping or visiting
this thriving commercial strip to imagine that in the mid 1980's,
this area had begun to show signs of urban blight which contributed
to the destabilization of many of New York City's neighborhoods
in the 1960's, 70's and 80's.
Five Million Dollar Capital Project
ENF recognizing that a successful
commercial strip was a necessary component in securing the community's
continued viability, embarked on a campaign to raise funds to revitalize
this commercial hub. Five million dollars in commercial revitalization
and capital improved grants from the New York State Division of
Housing and Community Renewal and the New York Public Development
Corporation, was responsible for the establishment of the Church-Nostrand
Avenue Merchant Association, renovation of twenty vacant stores,
re-pavement of streets and sidewalks, installation of brick crosswalks,
installation of a new traffic light system and modern street lights.
The Church-Nostrand Avenue
Merchant's Association is one of the Borough's growing
Merchants Associations. It actively works to support its 345 business
members and offers ongoing technical assistance to its membership
to insure the success of their respective enterprises.
The major commercial strip generates
over 50 millions dollars in annual revenue and provides 3,000 permanent
jobs for Brooklyn residents. ENF is committed to assisting the Church-Nostrand
Avenue business district and other East Flatbush commercial strips
in strengthening the community's economic base by acting as a liaison
and conduit for public and/or private sector investment opportunities.
